"I think that your visit is a support of the democratic development, which we have chosen," Atambayev said during a bilateral meeting with Merkel, noting that his country "attaches great importance to the visit."
On Wednesday evening, Merkel arrived in Kyrgyzstan in an official visit for bilateral cooperation talks, where she will stay until later in the day.
"It is significant that your visit is held in the year of the 25th anniversary of independence of Kyrgyzstan. I am sure it [the visit] will take our bilateral relations to a new stage," Atambayev added.
On Wednesday, the two leaders are expected to discuss issues on boosting further bilateral cooperation and exchange opinions on significant matters on both the international and regional agendas.
Merkel is set to meet with Kyrgyz lawmakers, including parliament's spokesman in later in the day.
