The Kyrgyz Parliament has approved Sooronbai Jeenbekov for the post of the country’s prime minister.

BISHKEK (Sputnik) – On Monday, then-Prime Minister Temir Sariev announced his resignation.

Jeenbekov, 50, was educated as a zoological engineer and in the beginning of his career worked as a teacher, livestock specialist, and the director of a communal farm. He previously served as the country's agriculture, water, and reprocessing industry minister and plenipotentiary representative of Kyrgyzstan's government in the southern Osh Province.

Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambayev signed Prime Minister Temir Sariyev’s resignation decree amid a national scandal surrounding violations in a highway construction tender. The decree requires ministers and deputy prime ministers to retain their offices as acting ministers until the formation of a new government.

The cabinet scandal erupted following the publication of highway reconstruction procurement inspection results. The commission uncovered violations in the public tender won by a Chinese roads and bridges company.
