According to media reports, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan became the first woman in history of Vietnam to hold the office of the chairperson of the country's parliament.

BANGKOK (Sputnik) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan became on Thursday the first woman in history of Vietnam to hold the office of the chairperson of the country's National Assembly, local media reported Thursday.

According to the VnExpress newspaper, Ngan gained support of 472 of 484 voters within the assembly, while being elected.

The newspaper added that as the chairperson Ngan would replace Nguyen Sinh Hung, who had been chairing the parliament for five years, but was released by the legislative body from his position on Wednesday.

Later in the day, the parliament is expected to relieve of their duties country's President Truong Tan Sang and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
