US, Pakistan Call on Taliban to Return to Afghan Peace Talks
MOSCOW (Sputnik) On Friday, Bajwa reported that Sharif could visit Kabul to meet country's leadership and discuss the issues of peace in the crisis-torn country on December 27.

"#COAS takes off for Kabul with all the sincerity and optimism for better border mgmt [management] and peace process in Afgn [Afghanistan]," Bajwa said on his Twitter account.

Afghanistan is in a political and social turmoil, with the Taliban and other extremist organizations such as Islamic State (IS, or Daesh in Arabic, outlawed in Russia) taking advantage of instability in the country.

Islamabad is an active mediator in Afghan peace talks. In July, Pakistan hosted a first round of peace negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban insurgents in the resort town of Murree. They were followed by a series of reconciliation meetings. The negotiations have stalled in recent months, prompting the United States, Pakistan and China to start attempts to revive peace talks.
