TOKYO (Sputnik) — India has the opportunity to join the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Sunday.
"India has a practical opportunity to become party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," Kishida said, quoted by the NHK channel.
According to Kishida, Tokyo will immediately cease cooperation with New Delhi should India hold any nuclear tests.
On Saturday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Japan and India had signed a memorandum of understanding on peaceful use of civil nuclear power.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty entered into force in 1970 with the aim to prevent the spread of nuclear weaponry. Three states, namely India, Pakistan and Israel, denied to sign the treaty. North Korea withdrew from NPT in 2003.
