The Australian coalition government is on track to pass a draft law revoking the Australian citizenship of dual nationals fighting alongside extremist groups abroad after adopting committee recommendations, local media reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The legislation, backed by the ruling Labor Party in September and expected to be brought before the lower house later this week, strips dual nationals who have been convicted of fighting for terrorist groups abroad or engaged in terrorism-related activities at home of their Australian citizenship.

“The government decided during its joint party room meeting on Tuesday to adopt all 27 recommendations of the joint committee on intelligence and security,” The Guardian newspaper reported.

The proposed law would expand the citizenship revocation powers to crimes committed as far back as 10 years ago, for which the dual-national was sentenced to 10 years or more in prison.
