MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The incident took place near Belabagan Durga temple in the city of Deogarh in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand due to overcrowding as thousands of people were trying to make their way to the temple to mark a Hindu religious festival, police officer Subodh Kumar was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI.)
"Ten men and a woman died as the devotees tried to overtake each other around 4 a.m. [23:30 GMT]," Deputy Commissioner of police, Deogarh Amit Kumar told PTI.
More than 100,000 people were in a 3-mile-long queue at the gates, many waiting since Sunday night to get into the famous temple, according to the police.
All the injured were admitted to a local hospital, the police added.
In October 2013, at least 115 pilgrims, including women and children, were killed in a stampede on the bridge leading to the historic Ratangarh Mata temple in central India. About 500,000 pilgrims were estimated to have flocked to the temple.
