MOSCOW, January 2 (Sputnik) – The two police officers and a guard were killed at a mine in Indonesia, operated by Freeport-McMoRan Inc., a US company producing copper and gold, AFP reports, citing local police.
"We suspect they were killed while conducting a routine patrol around Freeport," Patrick Renwarin, a police spokesman said, as quoted by the Australian Associated Press.
The men were employed by PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan.
The deceased were found with machete and gunshot wounds.
"We still don’t know the cause of the deaths yet as we are still waiting for the full report," Renwarin said, as quoted by the news agency. A police investigation into the incident is underway.
Freeport-McMoRan develops mines in the Grasberg minerals district, rich in copper, gold and silver.
