Hong Kong protesters against China's involvement in the 2017 local elections, tried to break into the the Legislative Council building after the police moved away parts of the protest camp.

MOSCOW, November 19 (Sputnik) — Hong Kong demonstrators, protesting against China's involvement in the 2017 local elections, have attempted to break into the building of the parliament after the police cleared parts of the protest camp, BBC News reported Wednesday.

The broadcaster reported that the protesters used metal barricades to force their way into the building of the Legislative Council (Legco).

On November 18, after receiving the High Court's authorization, the police in Hong Kong cleared out several protest sites by removing the barricades.

The Hong Kong protests started on September 26, when the authorities in Beijing were discovered to be seeking to change the procedure for the election of Hong Kong's chief executive. The protesters oppose changes that would require the candidates for the 2017 election to be approved by a nominating committee appointed by the Chinese government.

On October 28, it was reported that around 650,000 Hong Kong citizens signed a petition against the Occupy Central movement. The owners of the buildings located in the vicinity of the protests turned to the High Court for an injunction to be issued.
