The preliminary results confirmed that the area is suitable for construction of a nuclear power plant with two 1,400-MW power units, according to the news outlet. The project reportedly may cost up to $14 billion.
The source said that the research works would take two years. The NPPA will reportedly use this time to reach an agreement with the Matrouh province’s authorities to secure a plot of land of about 30 square kilometers (11.5 square miles) for the plant’s construction.
The construction works are said to start only after Egypt's first nuclear power plant would be built in Babaa.
Companies from China, France and South Korea have already expressed interest in the second Egyptian nuclear power plant project, the sources told the newspaper.
In November 2015, Russia and Egypt signed an intergovernmental agreement on the construction of the Dabaa NPP on the Mediterranean Sea coast. It is set to become the largest construction project carried out by Russia and Egypt since the Aswan Dam.
The contract for the construction of the Dabaa NPP is estimated to be worth over $26 billion. The plant will include four units, each one with a capacity reaching 1200 megawatts. The complete offer of state corporation Rosatom suggests assistance from Russia in the establishment of an entire nuclear industry in Egypt.
