MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Powerful explosions heard in the Tunisian city of Ben Gardane near the border with Libya on Tuesday were the sound of the military destroying grenades seized from attackers, local media reported.
The military were exploding grenades to avoid their accidental detonation, the Tunisian Mosaique FM said, citing a source in the Ben Gardane security forces.
On Monday, militants attacked army, police and National Guard positions in the center of Ben Gardane, leaving at least 18 civilians dead. The Tunisian forces killed 36, arrested seven militants and seized several hiding places with weapons.
The Tunisian Interior Ministry ordered to impose a curfew, in force between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. local time, as well as closed two crossings on border with Libya.
