Three Tunisian police officers and one jihadist died in clashes at a checkpoint in Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, central Tunisia in the early hours of Monday, the Tunisian interior ministry announced on Monday.
According to reports, the shoot-out occurred when the Tunisian National Guard attempted to apprehend two militant Islamists who were traveling by motorcycle. In the clashes that followed, three officers and one jihadist were killed. Another suspect was wounded, was hospitalized and remains in a serious condition.
No militant group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Tunisian security forces have stepped up their campaign against the jihadist groups operating in the country in the wake of the Bardo National Museum attack in the capital, Tunis, in March, in which 21 people died.
