Earlier on Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Ottawa is slapping restrictions on five Russians and 32 Russian military organisations.
Canada has imposed sanctions against the Russian Defence Ministry over Moscow's ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.
The move is part of Canada's efforts to sanction five Russian individuals, including Ella Pamfilova, the chairwoman of the Russian Central Election Commission, and billionaire Roman Abramovich, as well as 32 Russian military organisations.
The sanctions stipulate these companies and government entities being banned from receiving any defence equipment or supplies from Canada.
Aside from the Russian Defence Ministry, sanctions were imposed on Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, as well as such companies as Rosoboronexport, the Kazan Helicopter Plant, the aircraft building corporation Irkut, and the Russian Helicopters holding.

Canada Bans Impotrts of Russian Oil Products

The Canadian government has since announced in a statement that Ottawa is banning imports of oil products from Russia under the sanctions.
"Petroleum.3.5 (1) It is prohibited for any person in Canada and any Canadian outside Canada to import, purchase, or acquire any good referred to in column 1 of Schedule 5, wherever situated, from Russia or from any person in Russia", the statement said.
The ban "does not apply to goods if a contract for the import, purchase, or acquisition of the good is entered into before the day on which this section comes into force", it added.

Russia's Special Op in Ukraine

Moscow has been conducting a special military operation to demilitarise and "de-Nazify" Ukraine since 24 February. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the operation is only targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure and the civilian population is not in danger. Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it has no plans to occupy Ukraine.
The US and its allies imposed packages of full-blown "severe" sanctions against Russia, with some of the restrictive measures including the closure of airspace to all Russian flights and sanctioning a number of Russian banks and officials.
In one of the latest developments, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin warned that Europe will face waves of consequences from the massive sanctions imposed on Moscow, adding that his country's decisions on the response to the aforementioned measures are being made in real time and after thorough consideration.
