Indicted on illegal drug use, the former performer attended the first hearing in his trial together with his father.
Former member of K-Pop boy band iKon B.I., real name Kim Han-bin, is facing three counts of marijuana usage and one count of purchasing LSD, with the first hearing of his trial on the 27th of August. The use or purchase of drugs is illegal in South Korea.
The artist was caught buying and using drugs back in 2016 and prosecutors are requesting a 3-year prison sentence and a fine of $1,300.
B.I.'s defence lawyer shared that he fully admits his guilt and is taking time to reflect on his poor behaviour, adding that while the singer did indeed purchase the drugs, he was just a 19-year-old teenager who made a silly mistake.
The musician's father also attended the court hearing and asked for forgiveness and also pleaded to forgive him for not paying proper attention to the education of his son.
The allegations against B.I. came into the spotlight in late 2019 amid various scandals surrounding iKon's agency YG Entertainment. Another artist from the label was involved in the notorious Burning Sun scandal. YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun-suk, charged with intimidation, was at that time under an intense investigation separately from B.I.
The final sentence in the case will be announced on the 10th of September.
Despite his legal woes, many fans continue to support their idol. His first full-length album "WATERFALL" was released in June of this year, just prior to the the legal process, and topped iTunes charts in 22 countries around the world.
