TOKYO (Sputnik) - For the Japanese team, this victory brought their first-ever Olympic epee gold and the third fencing gold in their history.
Japanese fencers defeated the Russian team 45-36 in the epee tournament final and won gold medals at Tokyo Olympics on Friday. In the meantime, the South Korean team claimed bronze medals, defeating Chinese fencers in a tight 45-42 standoff.
The fencing final put Japan closer to the first position, as they now have 17 gold medals, just one less than China. Meanwhile, Russia occupies fourth place with ten gold medals, right after the United States.
