According to a report by the coalition, Yemen's armed Houthi political opposition movement periodically attacks the kingdom’s border territories, responding to Riyadh's military incursion into the nation. The Saudi-led coalition entered Yemen's civil war in 2015 by invitation of the country's president-in-exile, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The Saudi-led military coalition, fighting in Yemen, claimed that its forces prevented another attack by an armed drone on Sunday, that, according to Al Arabiya, was carried out by the armed Houthi political opposition faction. The attack reportedly targeted the southwestern Saudi city of Khamis Mushait.

The coalition of Arab states has several times reported military strikes by Houthis during the week. On Friday, the joint forces claimed that they intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward the southern Saudi city of Jazan.

The Friday attack came after Saudi-led coalition have reported three days running that it had prevented explosive-laden drones strikes, aimed at the kingdom's city of Khamis Mushait.

In 2015, when Saudi Arabia responded to the Yemeni president's request for military assistance against the Houthi opposition movement, Riyadh, along with several regional countries, formed a military coalition that has been conducting attacks in the Middle East's poorest nation ever since. The Houthi movement have attacked the Saudis in retaliation, particularly airports and other key infrastructure located in the kingdom's southern region bordering Yemen.
