MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Kremlin wishes US President Donald Trump a speedy recovery from the coronavirus, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a letter to his US counterpart, Donald Trump, wishing him and his wife Melania a swift recovery from the coronavirus, the Kremlin said on Friday.

"I am sure that your stamina, cheerfulness and optimism will help you defeat this dangerous virus," Putin said.

In his letter, Putin wished Trump and the first lady of the US "a speedy recovery" and "voiced sincere support in this tough moment," according to the Kremlin.

Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskiv said, "Of course, we wish President Trump a swift and easy recovery".

Trump previously said he and the first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, had tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Trump's physician, the US president feels fine and is expected to continue carrying out his duties without disruption.

The announcement was made hours after Trump said that he and his spouse would quarantine until getting the results of their coronavirus tests following confirmation that Hope Hicks, who is one of Trump's closest advisors, had contracted the virus.
