Earlier in the day, UK media reported of a major incident in the heart of the British capital, saying that several shots had been fired at London Bridge.

London's Metropolitan Police have been deployed to London Bridge amid reports of a shooting incident, law enforcement said in a statement.

As a result of the attack, several people were injured and the suspected perpetrator detained, the police said.

A witness said that he had heard about five or six gunshots on London Bridge, and "everyone was running away screaming about a man with a knife".

Witnesses have shared photos of the ongoing incident, saying that at least seven police cars have arrived at the site. Several ambulances have also arrived at the scene.

The police have cordoned off the bridge, reports say. BBC reporter John McManus claimed he saw a group of men fighting on the bridge.

Earlier reports indicate that several shots have been fired at the bridge.

Transport for London reported that London Bridge station is closed following the incident. Sky News reported that the attacker was believed to have been fatally shot by the police, which the law enforcement confirmed later.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged that all those involved in the recent attack on London Bridge will be "hunted down" and punished, and noted the bravery of the citizens who disarmed and grappled to the ground the attacker before police arrived at the scene.

London Bridge links the city's business district with the south bank of the River Thames.

According to the police, the suspect was 28-year-old Usman Khan, who had been residing in the Staffordshire area. The police said that the man had been convicted in 2012 for terrorism offences and was released in December 2018.

"We are now in a position to confirm the identity of the suspect as 28-year-old Usman Khan (10.03.1991), who had been residing in the Staffordshire area," the police said in a statement, adding that it was not actively seeking anyone else in relation to the attack.

Two of the five people wounded in the London Bridge incident have died, London police service Commissioner Cressida Dick said Friday.

"As well as the suspect, shot dead by police, two of those injured in this attack in the London Bridge area have tragically lost their lives. My heart goes out to their loved ones and to the three further injured victims who I understand are being treated in hospital," she told reporters.

British police shot dead a man on London Bridge in a terrorism incident, the UK's top counter-terrorism officer said, adding that the suspect wore a hoax explosive vest.

"A male suspect was shot by specialist armed officers from City of London Police and I can confirm that this suspect died at the scene. A number of other people received injuries during the incident and as soon as we can provide further updates on their condition, we will. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those anxiously awaiting news from loved ones", he said.

He also added that the extensive cordons in the area will remain in place for a considerable amount of time.

"Due to reports that the suspect may have had an explosive device, specialist officers also attended the scene and wide cordons are in place to ensure there remains no further danger to the public. However, I can confirm that at this time, we believe a device that was strapped to the body of the suspect is a hoax explosive device. Officers continue to carry out meticulous searches in the area to ensure there is no outstanding threat to the public", he added.
