Juan Guaido, a US-backed Venezuelan opposition figure and self-proclaimed interim president of the country, released a video on his Twitter page on Tuesday, urging the country's troops to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. However, hours later, Maduro announced that the country’s military leaders had shown "their total loyalty".

Protesters and police have gathered outside the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, DC following the call on the military by opposition figure Juan Guaido to end the "usurpation" of power by Nicolas Maduro, the country's legitimate president. According to a Sputnik correspondent working at the scene, Secret Service agents have been spotted near the embassy and the overall situation remains tense.
