Blast at Chemical Plant in Czech Republic Kills at Least Six

The explosion occurred at Synthos plant that is located in the town of Kralupy nad Vltavou near the Czech capital of Prague.

"The explosion took place at the territory of a private company. The fire did not break out. When the first team arrived at the plant, six bodies were found, and there were also wounded people, including, those seriously injured. An ambulance helicopter has just arrived,” a fire department spokesman said, as aired by local network TV channels.

According to Czech media outlet iROZHLAZ.cz, two of those injured by the explosion were rushed to the hospital, including one who was lifted out in a helicopter.

Police spokeswoman Marketa John told the outlet that the explosion was reported at around 10 am local time. Rescuers and police have arrived at the site.

"The area has been closed because the rescuers are here. There was an explosion during the cleaning of an empty tank," Kralupy's Mayor Petr Holecek said to reporters while speaking at the explosion site. He specified that the incident occurred far from the city and adding the city residents were safe.

Petr Svoboda, another firefighter spokesman, said there was no danger of new blasts.
