A leader of India’s ruling political party Bhartiya Janta Party accused Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, of being “unpatriotic” for choosing Italy over India as their wedding destination, only to be slammed by the cricketer’s fans on Twitter.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — The captain of Indian cricket team Virat Kohli recently tied the knot with Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma in Italy. They announced their wedding on Twitter along with photographs of the serene location. Later, they went on a honeymoon to Finland. The couple returned to India earlier this week only to be welcomed with the obnoxious comment from a leader of the ruling BJP who accused the duo of not being "patriotic enough" to have their wedding in India.

Panna Lal Shakya, a BJP leader and Member of Madhya Pradesh state legislature said that Virat, like the worldly incarnations of the Hindu Gods, ought to have had his wedding in India.

"Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Vikramaditya, Yudhishthir (characters of Indian mythology) got married on this land. You all too must have got married here. None of us goes to a foreign country to get married. He (Virat Kohli) earned money here and spent billions there (Italy). He doesn't have any respect for the country. This proves he is not a patriot," Shakya told the press earlier this week.

Virat Kohli's fans on Twitter were quick to respond. They set the virtual space abuzz with some furious as well as funny comments on Shakya and his obnoxious perspective.
