The Finnish police said Monday they demanded pre-trial detention of five Moroccan men in relation to the deadly stabbing in the southwestern city of Turku.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Friday, two people were killed and eight others were injured in a knife attack in Turku's market square. The key suspect, who was shot by the police while being detained, is an 18-year-old citizen of Morocco. The suspect arrived in Turku last year and was trying to get asylum in Finland.

"In relation to the Turku stabbings on Friday, the police demands pre-trial detention of five men … The main suspect is demanded to be detained for two murders with terrorist intent and eight attempted murders with terrorist intent. The suspect will attend the court session tomorrow by a video link from the hospital," the police said in a statement.

According to the statement, four other suspects, nationals of Morocco, "are suspected of participation in the murders and attempted murders committed with a terrorist intent" and deny any involvement.
