Donald Trump Jr. should testify before a congressional committee that is probing Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election, US House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a briefing on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Trump Jr. released an email chain with UK-born publicist Rob Goldstone about a meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya to allegedly discuss compromising information on then-presidential nominee and Trump rival Hillary Clinton.

"I think any witness who's been asked to testify before Congress should testify," Ryan told reporters. "Anybody who is asked to testify to the Senate should do that."

Senator Chuck Grassley has invited Trump Jr. to publicly testify before the Senate Judiciary committee about his meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Lavrov on Trump Jr-Lawyer Meeting: Attempt to 'Make Mountain Out of Molehill'
Veselnitskaya has denied any links with the Kremlin and insists that she never had sensitive information about Clinton, nor any intentions of damaging the former presidential candidate's reputation.

On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the media coverage of the Veselnitskaya-Trump Jr. scandal is meant to overshadow Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first bilateral meeting. Previously, he said that he doesn't know who Veselnitskaya is.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov blasted Western coverage as "wild" and wondered how meeting with a Russian lawyer could pose a threat to anyone.

Russia has repeatedly denied interference in the US presidential election and has called such allegations absurd.
