WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The earthquake was recorded at 6:31 a.m. local time (12:31 p.m. GMT) 38 kilometers (23.6 miles) southwest of the city of Puerto San Jose at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the USGS.
No tsunami is expected after the earthquake, the US National Tsunami Warning Center said.
The powerful quake was felt in El Salvador, according to media reports. There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.
Five people were killed on June 14 when a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck western Guatemala near the Mexican border.
