US Nukes Need Modernizing But Additional Bombs Not Necessary - STRATCOM

The United States’ stockpile of nuclear weapons is large enough that new bombs are not needed, however existing nuclear weapons need to be refurbished, the US Strategic Command (STRATCOM) commander Gen. John Hyten said in a Twitter message.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States has an estimated 2,000 nuclear weapons, according to published reports.

"We don't need more nuclear forces, but we do need to modernize them," Hyten tweeted on Friday.

Former President Barack Obama authorized a nuclear modernization program that would cost an estimated $1 trillion over the next 30 years — an effort embraced by President Donald Trump.
