Governor of the US state of North Dakota Jack Dalrymple must remove a blockade cutting off access to emergency services for tribal members opposing construction of an oil pipeline, Standing Rock Sioux tribe chairman Dave Archambault said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The blockade was imposed at the Backwater Bridge, the site of a violent clash in November between law enforcement and protesters opposing the $3.7 billion Dakota Access Pipeline construction because of environmental concerns.

"The blockade has been a serious issue for our people as it cuts us off from the shortest route to major hospitals and other emergency services," Archambault said on Wednesday.

Archambault also called on protesters, who are still at the main encampment, to respect officials conducting maintenance and repairs on the bridge.

Earlier this month, the US Army Corps of Engineers decided to halt final-stage construction of the nearly 1,200-pipeline in the state of North Dakota because of concerns over the project’s environmental impact.
