Tillerson Could Stick to Another Line in US Foreign Policy - RAPP Head

Rex Tillerson, a nominee for the US secretary of state, is expected to change country's foreign policy in a different approach, the RAPP forum executive director said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Exxon Mobil Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson, a nominee for the US secretary of state, is expected to fulfill the country's foreign policy with more pragmatic and less ideological approach during his tenure, the executive director of the Russian American Pacific Partnership (RAPP) forum said.

On Tuesday, US President-elect Donald Trump officially announced he would nominate Tillerson to be the United States’ next secretary of state.

"Mr. Rex Tillerson is a highly capable and experienced executive and brings tremendous international business experience to his candidacy as nominee for Secretary of State… Presumably, he is a pragmatist and perhaps less an ideologue," Derek Norberg, who is also president and founder of the Council of US-Russia Relations, told RIA Novosti, adding that it was too early to comment on the details of Tillerson's policy.

At the same time, the expert added that the nomination of Tillerson could be a signal that Washington's foreign policy would be less "interventionist."

Norberg's words were echoed by position of the vice president of Washington-based Eurasian Center, Earl Rasmussen, who said that the choice made by Trump would allow the United States to use its foreign policy for improvement of relations with other nations and to "build bridges" in relations with such partners.
