The draft of a UN Security Council resolution on Aleppo, which was vetoed by Russia and China, was meant to "protect the interests of terrorists and their sponsors," Nidal Kabalan, a former Syrian ambassador to Turkey, told Sputnik.

"The militants were supposed to destroy the Syrian state according to a scenario used in Afghanistan and Libya. However, in the last two weeks, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) assisted by Russia has carried out a large-scale offensive on the terrorists," he said. "Clearly, those who created this extremist project are furious since millions of dollars have been invested into this and it is too late to give up. They are trying to save the terrorists and move them from besieged areas."

Nidal Kabalan was convinced that once Aleppo is liberated, it will be easier to free other cities still held by radical groups, including Daesh, al-Nusra Front and the like.

Russia and China blocked a draft resolution on Aleppo on Monday. Both countries have been concerned that the document, which called for a humanitarian pause, was not well thought-out and radical groups active in the embattled Syrian city would use the temporary ceasefire to recover from recent losses.

This is Why Russia-China Joint Front Against UNSC Resolution on Aleppo 'Matters'
Alyan Baqr, a Syrian MP from Aleppo, told Sputnik that the Syrians do not need a brief lull in fighting.

"Everyone understands that the militants use [ceasefires] to regroup and rearm. The Syrians need the war to end. They need their country to be free of terrorists. But Western countries are not voting for such resolutions," he said.

The MP further said that Russia is the only country helping the Syrian people.

"Thousands are fleeing eastern Aleppo. These are innocent victims who need help. Who is helping them? The Syrian authorities and Russians provide displaced people with essentials: food, medicine and temporary housing," he said.

The battle for Aleppo, one of the largest cities in the country, has become key for the outcome of the deadly Syrian conflict which has claimed more than 400,000 lives and left millions displaced. The city is mostly controlled by the SAA and its allies, but several districts in eastern Aleppo remain in the hands of radicals.

"The whole world understands that the battle for Syria is taking place in Aleppo. This is why it has been covered so extensively. All world powers are fighting there, but on different sides. Russians are with the Syrians against the militants and their sponsors," the MP noted.
