Grants totaling more than $300 million over the next five years are being awarded to colleges and universities in the United States to research exotic solutions to US transportation bottlenecks, Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Beyond Traffic reports lists numerous exotic goals, such as eliminating 90 percent of traffic accidents by switching to driverless cars, or developing systems where everyone can reach their workplace, even without a car.

"The work of UTCs [University Transportation Centers] will help the United States meet the impacts outlined in Beyond Traffic, a draft report documenting trends and challenges to the nation’s transportation system over the next 30 years," Fox said on Monday.

Other goals of research include extending the life of transportation infrastructure and preserving the environment, the report explained.

Transportation specialists are calling for more than $3 trillion in spending to repair and upgrade roads, bridges, air traffic control and other parts of the US aging infrastructure by the year 2020.
