MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The retaking of the rebel-held areas of Aleppo by government forces will not end the war in Syria, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini said on Saturday.
"I'm convinced the fall of Aleppo will not end the war," Mogherini said at the Rome 2016 Mediterranean Dialogues: Beyond turmoil, a positive agenda conference.
Mogherini noted that there was still a possibility for "other military escalations" in the region.
She added that following the liberation of Syria, efforts must be made for the reconciliation and reconstruction of the country, implementing a system that will account for the "participation of all components of the Syrian society… and the region."
In November, the Syrian government forces supported by local militias launched a large-scale offensive against extremist groups in the eastern part of Aleppo. According to the Russian reconciliation center in Syria, earlier in the week, Syrian government forces made major strides in east Aleppo, liberating almost half of the area by late Monday.
