Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday he did not rule out the possibility of contacts between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump before the latter's inauguration.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Trump won the November 8 US president election, stunning his opponents and a large number of mainstream media who considered his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton a favorite.

"I do not know whether any contacts between President [Putin] and Trump will take place before the inauguration. I do not know, but certainly it can not be ruled out. Congratulatory message has already been sent," Peskov said in an interview with the newspaper "Moskovsky Komsomolets."

The presidential inauguration will be held on January 20, 2017.
