WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick have endorsed Trump, the Republican presidential candidate said Monday.

"Tom Brady… great, great champion: He called today and he said, ‘Donald, I support you, you're my friend and I voted for you," Trump said on Monday night. "I was in the plane and they handed me a letter and it was from coach Belichick. Is there a better reference than Bill Belichick and Tom Brady?"

Belichick and Brady enjoy huge personal popularity in the Northeastern industrial US states of New Hampshire and Massachusetts that Trump needs to defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to clinch the 2016 US presidential election.

"Congratulations on a tremendous campaign. You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media and have come out beautifully. Your leadership is amazing. The toughness and perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable," Belichick wrote to Trump in his letter.

Trump said he made the letter public with Belichick’s permission.
