WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The ban extension takes effect October 27, according to the release.
“This action extends the prohibition against certain flight operations in the Simferopol (UKFV) and Dnipropetrovsk (UKDV) flight information regions (FIRs),” the release on Monday said. “The FAA finds this action to be necessary to address a continuing hazard to persons and aircraft engaged in such flight operations.”
The FAA first implemented the prohibition after the July 2014 downing of a Malaysia Airlines jet over eastern Ukraine in which all 298 people aboard were killed. Initially the ban covered US-flagged airlines routed over and around the Crimean peninsula, which is now part of Russia. The FAA also forbids flight operations over Crimea and adjacent areas of the Black and Azov seas.
