The Kurdish militia downed an intelligence drone of Daesh terrorist group to the east of the Iraqi city of Mosul, a spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga said on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — He added that the downed drone was inspected by experts.

"[Kurdish] militias shot down with small arms a drone east of Mosul, launched by the IS [Daesh] militants. The militants are using drones for reconnaissance and monitoring of our positions and movements,” the spokesperson for KRG, an official ruling body in Northern Iraq, told RIA Novosti.

Mosul is the country’s third-largest city and has been under Daesh occupation since June 2014.

On October 17, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi announced the start of the military operation to retake Mosul from Daesh terror group, outlawed in Russia.

According to local media, about 30,000 Iraqi soldiers and 4,000 Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are taking part in the Mosul operation, backed by artillery and airstrikes carried out by the US-led international coalition.
