Bavarian authorities declared a crackdown on a controversial "Reich Citizens" movement after its member wounded four police officers during a shootout in Georgensgmuend earlier in the day, the region’s interior minister said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Joachim Herrmann vowed that "all possible preventive and repressive measures" would be taken to protect the community from most violent members of the movement, whose members believe the Third Reich continues to exist in modern Germany but within pre-WWII borders.

"This incident shows that we must beef up surveillance of the so-called Reich Citizens movement," Herrmann told reporters in Roth.

One of the first steps will be to revise firearms ownership licenses of known Reich Citizens’ members, the minister announced. Herrmann said today’s shooter possessed an arsenal of over 30 weapons that the 49-year-old claimed had been purchased for hunting.

A court warrant was issued to seize the guns because the owner was deemed "unreliable." The shootout erupted after police tried to carry out the court order. One of the officers received a life-threatening wound and was rushed to hospital for an urgent surgery.
