Ratification of EU-Ukraine Association Accord Runs into Problems - EU Source

There are serious problems with the ratification of the EU-Ukraine association agreement, a high-ranking EU source said Tuesday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – In 2014, the European Union signed an agreement with Ukraine to deepen political association and economic integration. Ukraine had to implement a series of political and economic reforms to gain free-trade access to the EU market.

"We believe that there are serious problems with the ratification of the agreement," the source told reporters on the eve of the EU summit in Brussels on October 20-21.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will deliver a report "on further steps in the ratification of the agreement" during the summit.

"I, however, do not expect any decisions to be made," the source said.

In April, the Netherlands held a referendum in which 61 percent of Dutch voters rejected the ratification of the deal. Currently, the Netherlands is the only EU state, which has not yet ratified the agreement.
