Toyota Prius sedans sold in the United States with model years 2016 and 2017 are subject to a voluntary safety recall because faulty emergency brakes could cause unattended cars to begin rolling downhill, the auto manufacturer said in a press release on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Toyota said that all 92,000 vehicles affected by the recall are located in the United States.

“On the involved vehicles, there is a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative,” the release explained. “If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than ‘park’ while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The company plans to begin mailing notices to all affected customers beginning in November, offering to fix the defect for free.

The release gave no information on any accidents or injuries due to the defective brakes.
