Kazakhstan Discusses Further Aid to Syria With Russia, Red Cross, UN
14:57 GMT 11.10.2016 (Updated: 10:56 GMT 26.10.2022) Kazakhstan is currently in talks with Russia, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross on providing additional humanitarian assistance to Syria amid the worsening humanitarian situation in the Arab republic, the press office of Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry told Sputnik on Tuesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov expressed hope that member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) would join the humanitarian operation in Aleppo.
"Amid the escalation of the crisis [in Syria], we are currently discussing with the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations and the Russian Federation issues of further humanitarian assistance to Syria," the press office said.
Kazakhstan is greatly concerned about the worsening of the situation in Syria, the press office noted, adding that the country "provides humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees and stands for the earliest possible resolution of this bloody conflict in the country."
According to the ministry’s press office, in 2012, Kazakhstan helped the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, providing aid worth $200,000 to each country. In 2015, after the intra-Syrian talks in Astana, the country provided additional assistance in the amount of over $330,000 to supply medical and food aid to the Syrian refugees on the Turkish-Syrian border.
