EU, Kabul to Co-Host Brussels Conference on Afghanistan on Oct. 4-5

The European Union and the Government of Afghanistan will co-host the Brussels conference on Afghanistan on October 4-5.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The event will bring together representatives of some 70 countries, as well as 30 international organizations and agencies, according to the European Union. It will seek to provide a platform for the government of Afghanistan to set out its vision and track record on reform, while the international community will have an opportunity to "signal sustained political and financial support to Afghan peace, state-building and development."

The conference will be focused on regional efforts to support a political peace process and economic cooperation, efforts of Afghanistan on reforms in several spheres and joint international and Afghan efforts to increase effectiveness of international support and funding.

On October 4, side events on women's empowerment and regional connectivity will be taking place.

Main events of the forum will take place on October 5. European Council President Donald Tusk, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for Development Cooperation, will represent the European Union. President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah will represent Afghanistan. Russian presidential envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov will also participate in the event.
