The Russian Defense Ministry officials are considering outfitting the nation’s fleet of military vehicles with a new type of bullet-proof tires recently developed by the Scientific & Technical Center Kama, which may drastically improve a vehicle’s chances of survival during combat engagement.

The NU402 tire is fitted with special armored filling which is applied directly to a wheel’s rim. According to the Russian newspaper Izvestia, this enhancement allows a military vehicle to keep moving if it’s tires are completely deflated or even on fire.

"The NU402 will be used to outfit the Kornet-E mobile anti-tank missile systems mounted on the Tigr armored vehicle chassis. The factory tests of the new tires’ resistance to bullets and shrapnel have been successfully finished. The tires will be installed on Kornet-EM vehicle(s) which will then be used during the subsequent army trials," a source in the Defense Ministry told the newspaper.

The source also added that if the Ministry of Defense deems these tests a success, the new tires will likely be used to outfit all of the Tigr armored vehicle modifications employed by the Russian military.

STC Kama first showed of the NU402 to the world at the Army-2016 international military expo that was held on September 6-11 in Moscow.

The NU402 wheel is capable of withstanding a mine blast (with a yield of up to 400 grams of TNT) or several direct hits by small arms fire or shrapnel, allowing a stricken vehicle to safely flee the battlefield at a speed of up to 50 kilometers per hour.
