Russia, US Share Goal of Reaching Peace in Syria, Defeating Terrorism - Putin

Russia and the United States share a common goal of reaching peace in Syria and fighting terrorism, President Vladimir Putin said Saturday.

BISHKEK (Sputnik) — On September 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new plan on Syria, which stipulates a ceasefire that came into force on Monday.

"Still, I assume that we have a common aspiration to reach peace in Syria, as well as a common goal to fight terrorism. This is really a common goal, and there is no doubt that everyone in the world understands that, including our American partners, that are facing a challenge to differentiation draw a line between the opposition and terrorists," Putin said.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the list of groups who signed an agreement with the United States on adhering to the ceasefire provided by the US side contains blatantly terrorist formations cooperating closely with al-Nusra Front.

Russia, as well as the Syrian government forces fully comply with the obligations in the framework of the Syrian crisis settlement, Putin said.

"Russia fully complies with its obligations. Moreover, we have reached some agreements with President [Bashar] Assad and the Syrian government. As we see, the Syrian government forces fulfill these agreements."
