MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new plan on Syria, which stipulates a ceasefire that will come into force on September 12.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the ceasefire agreement the United States and Russia announced on Syria… This truce will hopefully be an important step in the direction of an agreement that ultimately ends a long-lasting civil war and the drama of the Syrian people," the ministry said in a statement.
Athens called on all parties to the conflict to fully adhere to the accord in order to immediately stop the bloodshed, protect civilian population and allow for the "unimpeded and seamless" distribution of humanitarian aid.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
