Russia Wins 3 Medals During 12th Rio Olympics Day

The Russian Olympic team won two silver medals in women’s freestyle wrestling and one bronze medal in women's boxing during the 12th day of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on August 17.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) — Wednesday saw 14 sets of medals being awarded in athletics, boxing, badminton, beach volleyball, taekwondo, table tennis, wrestling and equestrian. US athletes remained in the lead, with the total of 93 medals, 30 of them gold. The Russian team remained in the fourth place, with the total of 12 gold medals and 41 medals overall.

Silver in women's wrestling

Russia’s Valeria Koblova took silver in women’s freestyle wrestling in the under 58 kg category at the Rio Olympics. In the finals Koblova lost to Japan’s Kaori Icho with a score of 3 to 1 on Wednesday.

Another Russia's wrestler Natalia Vorobieva took silver on Wednesday in women’s freestyle 69 kg wrestling. In the Olympic finals Vorobieva lost to Japan’s Sara Dosho with a score of 3 to 1.

Yuri Shahmuradov, the head coach of the Russian women's national team for freestyle wrestling, called this result a failure, having taken the blame.

"I think losing two finals is a failure. To work hard, reach the finals and to lose, I would say, unskillfully… What can I say, who should be blamed for it? Me?… I said that I take the blame," Shahmuradov told reporters.

Bronze in boxing

Russia's boxer Anastasia Belyakova won bronze medal in women's light 60 kg at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In the semi-final fight with French boxer and acting world champion Estelle Mossely, Belyakova traumatized her hand and was unable to continue the fight. Doctors helped the Russian athlete to leave the ring. Belyakova lost on a technical knockout.

Russian boxer Mikhail Aloyan qualified for the semi-finals in men's fly 52 kg, having defeated Colombian Ceiber Avila with the score 3:0.

Russia's boxer Vladimir Nikitin, who defeated on Tuesday Irish boxer Michael Conlan in men's bantam 56 kg, will not fight in the semi-finals due to received injures and will get a bronze medal.

Russian volleyball team qualifies for semi finals

Russian men's volleyball team beat Canada in the quarter-final at the 2016 Rio Olympics. On August 19, the Russian team will play against Brazil in the semi-final.

"It is the third Olympics for me and you understand that it starts from the quarter-final. The Olympics started for our team today," Vladimir Alekno, the head coach of the men's national volleyball team, told reporters.

Klishina fails to jump to medal

Long jumper Darya Klishina, the only Russian track-and-field athlete admitted to the Rio Olympics, failed on Wednesday to win an Olympic medal, taking the ninth place in a long jumping contest. Klishina jumped at the distance of 6.63 meters.

"Of course, I cannot say I am satisfied with my result <…> I was ready to achieve a better result. I am trying to stay positive as it is my first Olympic experience and not everyone gets a chance to participate in the Olympics," Klishina told reporters.

On Tuesday, Klishina jumped at the distance of 6.64 meters and took the eighth place at the semi-finals qualification stage.
