WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Monday, Obama transferred twelve Yemeni and three Afghan detainees to the United Arab Emirates, the largest single transfer of prisoners from the facility.
“The President is giving more terrorists a one-way ticket back to the battlefield,” McCaul said in a press release. “We are a nation at war, and our commander-in-chief shouldn’t be handing back operatives to the other side.”
McCaul cited national intelligence estimates that as many as 30 percent of Guantanamo prisoners likely return to the fight after being released.
The Monday prisoner transfer comes as President Obama seeks to close Gitmo before the end of his term. When Obama took office in 2009, the controversial detention facility in Cuba held 242 men. There are currently 61 detainees remaining at the prison, with 20 cleared for release.
