MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Japan's Meteorological Agency reported that a 5.0-magnitude earthquake has occurred in the Ibaraki Prefecture, near the capital city of Tokyo.
According to the NHK broadcaster, 2.0-magnitude aftershocks were recorded near the Tokai NNP.
The media noted that the operation of the plant had been suspended to check the state of nuclear reactors. There were no reports on failure.
Japan is a seismically active region. In March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude offshore earthquake triggered a 46-foot tsunami that hit Japan's Fukushima nuclear power, leading to the leakage of radioactive materials and the shutdown of the plant. The accident is considered to be the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
