Belgium's Prime Minister Charles Michel has pledged to reverse the trend of defense spending cuts, media reported Friday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — According to the European Defence Agency's report, Belgium defense spending is less than one percent of their gross domestic product (GDP).

"My government has sincere and strong desire to reverse this trend [of skimping on defense]," he said at the NATO Summit in Warsaw as quoted by RTBF broadcaster.

In May 2016, UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon called on NATO countries, many of which are in Europe, to spend at least 2 percent of GDP on defense.
