MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has until July 21 to rule on whether "clean" Russian athletes can go to the 2016 Rio Olympics after being handed a blanket suspension over doping accusations, the CAS said Monday.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has banned Russian athletes from this August’s Olympics after allegations of widespread doping in Russian sport. Almost 70 Russians turned to the CAS asking it to review the ban for those who did not test positive for doping.
"The CAS Court Office initiated an arbitration procedure today. The final decision will be announced, at the latest, on 21 July 2016," the court’s official statement read.
The IAAF said earlier this month it had received more than 80 requests from Russian athletes seeking to compete internationally in an individual capacity.
