UK Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday he hoped Britain and the European Union would maintain the "closest possible" relations in trade and security after the country leaves the bloc.

LONDON (Sputnik) — Last week, a nationwide referendum was held in the United Kingdom in which 51.9 percent of the voters said they were in favor of the country withdrawing from the bloc.

"I very much hope we’ll seek the closest possible relationship in terms of trade, and cooperation and security, because that is good for us, that is good for them. And that’s the spirit in which the discussions I think will be held today," Cameron told reporters ahead of the EU summit.

The prime minister added he wanted the process and outcome of UK leaving to be as constructive as possible.
