The homelessness crisis in the US city of Los Angeles has prompted hundreds of people to take to the streets and demand from local authorities the introduction of a state of emergency, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Los Angeles Times, the demonstration started Saturday evening on the city' cultural icon, Hollywood Boulevard, with people calling on Mayor Eric Garcetti to declare a state of emergency in the city and spend previously announced $100 million to tackle the homelessness crisis.

Local police estimated around 1,500 people took part in Saturday’s march, the media outlet reported.

The Los Angeles city council has for many years provided the homeless with lodging during the November to March winter period.

City officials have allocated $100 million for various programs to assist the homeless population of Los Angeles, but the resources to provide those funds are yet to be identified.

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the number of encampments and people living in vehicles has increased by 85 percent over the last two years.
