MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to Munch, the perpetrators were predominantly male, nearly 80 percent of them came from the place where the offense was committed.
"This year there have already been 45 arson cases at refugee centers," Munch said in an interview with Germany’s Funke Mediengruppe newspaper.
The BKA president also raised concern over increasing verbal violence and online hate crimes against refugees.
"The number of reported crimes lies at about 3,000 cases. Verbal violence can be a precursor for attacks on refugees," Munch warned.
Europe has been dealing with a major influx of migrants with over 1.83 million arrivals from impoverished and war-torn regions in the Middle East and Africa last year.
Germany has become a key destination for the migrants. The country’s Interior Ministry estimates that Germany received around 1.1 million registered migrants last year alone, while about 500,000 undocumented migrants are currently staying in the country.
